The Ways Technology Can Make People Healthy and Happy

  • #Digital Insights
  • The impact of technology on our lives today, can simply, not be ignored. The 21st century has been called the era of science and technology (and now data), especially with the new technology developments and advancements over the last few decades.

In fact, digital technology also has great positive effects on humans in many ways, especially in supporting happiness and well-being. The continuous surge of such technological development has helped many countries save lives and help in improving the overall quality of life. Here are some advantages of technology in our daily life:

    1. Quick sharing and getting access to information

This is undeniable! Information from all around the globe is widely available on the internet.

While most of the news you get to see on social media is purely factual, one may also see image results for particular news. Not only more news is available, but all such information is also straightforward to access.

With its convenience, humans can deepen their knowledge in case they are more concerned about their health. When there are some suspicious signs of your current health status, with just one click, within less than one second, the information about your symptoms will appear on the screen. However, make sure you have come to the trustful and reliable place to check out for. Moreover, there are a lot of mobile applications for tracking your health and consulting wellness. The digitization of regulatory norms and practices for proper health maintenance allows us to access the right information required for proper maintenance of the body and keeping fit for the foreseeable future.

    2. No more distancing problems

Without today’s technology, “social distancing” would have meant isolation. From work, education, and errands to leisure activities and socializing, technology is making “social distancing” possible with minimal sacrifice compared to what previous generations would have had to endure to achieve the same degree of physical separation.

It is of course true that looking at screens for prolonged periods has its downsides and that moderation is important. But the use of technology to help people stay connected and keep society running smoothly during this pandemic is turning the narrative that digital technology threatens human interaction and happiness upside‐down.

Online doctor consultation has become more of a widespread practice delivering fast accurate and informative suggestions and prescriptive methods on how to deal with certain health issues. It is now possible to get medical advice and solutions to health-related problems through online doctor consultations. This removes the hassle of physically making appointments and going to a medical professional’s chamber.

    3. Advancing healthcare and wellness system

Tech possesses an enormous potential to improve health and healthcare systems as we know them. From AI-powered clinical drug trials through enabling preventative patients’ monitoring up to wellness solutions like wearables. We have seen tech minding the gap in healthcare in the pandemic. Telemedicine apps are the first step to making healthcare more equitable and accessible for all, no matter their socioeconomic status. Also, Electronic Health Records provide nurses and technicians for entering such data digitally rather than writing the requisite data like a vital sign, weight, test results, etc. manually. This makes it more efficient and faster to allocate the patients’ data and thus deliver more accurate and quick treatment.

Additionally, wide tech adoption by both patients and healthcare professionals has immense potential to improve public health entities’ efficiency. Tech advancements in preventative health (like wearables) can diminish overall healthcare expenditures and allow to monitor patients’ status and detect abnormalities sooner, hence reacting sooner. Complex healthcare systems fueled with AI analytics are able to better distribute care and treatment.

    4. Environmental protection and smart cities

When it comes to the question of the effect of technology in our life and the environment in the past, the answer was “not so good”. However, a greater awareness of the need to protect the environment has grown during the last decade, and technology has been one of the main sectors to come on board.

Initiatives like converting plastic trash into moisture and heat resistant blocks that may be used for building roads, developing a remote environmental sensor system that can identify wildfires 1 hour ahead before they start, and devices for measuring humidity, dehydration, quality of air, carbon dioxide concentration, O2 level in water proves the positive and healthy effect of technologies.

The concept of smart cities is also closely related to environmental protection. Many cities around the globe are using tech solutions to implement measures to reduce waste and pollution and optimize energy usage. Electric cars are favored in the city centers; waste distribution regulations also rely on the Internet of Things to optimize processes. IoT is able to reduce the frequency of bin collections and minimizes overall waste collection costs, lowering carbon emissions in cities.

    5. Supporting the disabled

Modern science and technology have now made nearly everything possible. Not only brails that work on electronic pulses, Artificial feet, smart sticks are invented, but there are also many apps and websites that support the disabled.

In fact, mobile apps for Android and iOS smartphones are rapidly helping people with disabilities to find their way around the world much better — and helping them to live better lives in the process. From traveling guidance to accessibility hacks, even personal dating, such as finding wheelchair-accessible toilets and parking space, GPS for the Blind, speech-to-text…

Disabled are no more disabled. They are surely in the long run of success along with the normal ones.

But, How Can We Avoid The Negative Impacts Of Technology?

As we already mentioned above, today’s world is crammed with technology. Due to its vast growth, many people are concerned about the negative effects of technology such as its overuse, psychological and physical issues.

We want to encourage smart use of technology that takes advantage of its conveniences and counteracts the side effects caused by overuse. By considering the following symptoms linked to technology addiction, you can continue harnessing its power to improve your overall well-being while staying connected. Here are a few keys you can consider to use digital technology properly:

    1. Reduce digital eye strain: Position yourself at an arm’s distance away from the screen, increase text size on devices to make them easier to read; Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break, and focus on something 20 feet away. To train yourself to blink more, try to get in the habit of blinking every time you breathe. You can get eye exams regularly to check on.
    2. Address smartphone addiction in bed: To avoid sleep disruption, try replacing late-night technology use with sleep-conducive activities such as taking a bath or reading in bed. Resisting the urge to keep your phone near your bed can also help minimize nighttime interruptions. Remember to track your usage and set a limit time to use it.
    3. Avoid being inactive: Try to take part in outdoor activities to reduce the couch-potato lifestyle by watching TV, surfing the internet all day long. You can invite your friends to come along with you.
    4. Manage social media use: Social media addiction is linked to a rise in mental health disorders like depression suicidal ideation, particularly in teenagers. Researchers made that correlation by highlighting how social media platforms place higher social pressures on young people and adults that can lead to instances of cyberbullying, increased need for approval, and general feelings of discontent. To avoid this situation as much as possible, you should:
    • Carefully decide what you want to post and who you wish to see it
    • Delete specific apps that might be getting in the way of your productivity
    • Pay attention to how you feel and eliminate those negative posts.
    • Do not trust 100% anything on the internet, somehow they are spreading fake news. Filter information carefully and check the information on reliable sources.
    • Log off and take regular social media breaks
    • Get support from your trusted people if someone tries to harm you and report directly to that social platform when being abused.

    Conclusion

Technology — The Internet, smartphones, and social media — can hurt our happiness and health. But, if we’re thinking about how we use technology, it also has the potential to make us healthier and happier. So we don’t necessarily need to get rid of our phones and computers or go on a full digital detox. Developers just need to be thoughtful about building technology, providing digital solutions and we need to be thoughtful about using it, in ways that promote happiness.
